چکیده

In this paper, we propose a new, e cient, fast retransmission scheme for wireless LANs. Wireless LANs are becoming popular and providing an e cient protocol over a wireless link is important. In our experiments with 2.4 GHz WaveLAN, the poor TCP performance observed was attributed to frequent expiration of the retransmission timer. To avoid unnecessary expiration of the retransmission timer, we propose a scheme in which fast retransmission is performed e ciently. The proposed modi cation only a ects a TCP sender, and our version of TCP with the change is interoperable with existing TCP implementations. The change is especially e ective in wireless LAN environments, where we have demonstrated signi cant improvements in throughput, 10 15%, via experiments with 2.4 GHz WaveLAN.

TCP End-to-End Performance Improvement over Wireless Networks via Early Packet Loss Recovery

A new technique is proposed that enables TCP to early detect packet losses, which cannot be detected and retransmitted using the standard fast retransmit mechanism, and to quickly retransmit those packets without waiting for a timeout to occur, thereby improving TCP performance. Early Packet Loss Recovery (EPLR) is achieved by considering the expected number of acknowledgements and the number o...

TCP with Bulk Repeat – Implementation and Analysis

The TCP protocol was designed for wired networks and suffers from performance degradation in error-prone wireless environments (i.e., IEEE 802.11 LANs or high latency satellite links). The most widespread TCP variant – NewReno – needs one RTT to retransmit each lost packet, which can be very time consuming in high latency links. TCP with Bulk Repeat tries to solve these shortcomings by introduc...

TCP In Conflict-Based Wireless Links

Abstract : TCP’s bidirectional traffic causes self-interference in contention-based wireless links as in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs and results in the loss of TCP data segments and ACKs. The fast-recovery algorithm is the basis for congestion control in most TCP enhancements proposed to address wireless network characteristics. However we show in this paper, that fast-recovery worsens performanc...

TCP Congestion Control Scheme for Wireless Networks based on TCP Reserved Field and SNR Ratio

Currently, TCP is the most popular and widely used network transmission protocol. In actual fact, about 90% of connections on the internet use TCP to communicate. Through several upgrades and improvements, TCP became well optimized for the very reliable wired networks. As a result, TCP considers all packet timeouts in wired networks as due to network congestion and not to bit errors. However, w...

BaseStation Assisted TCP: A Simple Way to Improve Wireless TCP

In recent years, extensive research effort has been devoted to TCP congestion control in hybrid wired-wireless networks. A general agreement is that the TCP sender should respond differently to wireless losses and disconnection, i.e., not slow down as drastically as for congestion losses. Thus, research focus for wireless TCP congestion control is the discrimination between the wireless inheren...
